Ukrainian drones hit six Russian regions as missiles rain on Kiev

Aug 31, 2023

Kyiv [Ukraine], August 31: Two people were killed and six injured in a powerful aerial assault on Kiev by the Kremlin's forces, the local administration said, while a half dozen regions of Russia came under attack from Ukrainian drones on Wednesday.
The drone flights, which took place in areas deep across the border, marked one of the biggest raids by Ukraine on Russian territory since Moscow launched the all-out invasion of its neighbour in February 2022.
Four Il-76 military transport aircraft stationed at an airport in Russia's Pskov region, which borders Latvia and Estonia, were destroyed when dozens of drones arrived, the governor said.
In addition, a fuel depot went up in flames. A spokesman for the fire brigade said the blaze was brought under control and there was no danger of it spreading.
Drones were also over the Kaluga region south-west of Moscow. The governor said one was shot down and slightly damaged a residential building; the second crashed into an empty fuel depot and exploded.
In the city of Bryansk, near the Ukrainian border, the building housing a Russian investigative authority was damaged by failing debris.
Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of the Bryansk, said a total of six unmanned vehicles were shot down. Drones were also reported by officials in the Orlov and Ryazan regions.
Media, citing witnesses, said there had been explosions in the area of an industrial plant in the Tula region, which is known for its arms industry.
Kiev has been stepping up its drone attacks against Russia, hitting sites near the border, but also in the capital Moscow. The number of victims and the severity of the damage is dwarfed by the level of death and destruction being inflicted on Ukraine.
Overnight in Kiev, a wave of Russian cruise missiles from the direction of the Caspian Sea was preceded by an attack with drones from the north. Ukrainian commander-in-chief ValeriiZaluzhnyi said Russia launched 28 cruise missiles and 16 Shahed drones.
The majority of the projectiles were said to have been intercepted.
According to the prosecutor's office, two people were killed and six others injured in the capital Kiev and the surrounding region.
