The US Army contracted the purchase of artillery ammunition for almost one billion dollars, because of Ukraine

Feb 18, 2023

Washington [US], February 18: The US military has announced a nearly $1 billion contract to increase production of 155mm artillery ammunition, which is used in large quantities by Ukraine.
Military manufacturers "General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems" and "American Ordnance" will compete for individual ammunition orders under a contract worth a total of $993.7 million, according to an Army statement.
The goal is to produce between 12,000 and 20,000 additional pieces of artillery shells per month.
The military previously awarded a $522 million contract to order ammunition of the same caliber from two other companies as part of the Pentagon's aid package to Ukraine.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 confirmed the return of conflict with the very massive use of artillery ammunition.
In November, a U.S. official said Russian forces were firing as many as 20,000 rounds of artillery munitions a day, and Ukraine between 4,000 and 7,000 rounds, which is far more than non-state producers can even produce to keep track.
However, the amount of ammunition used by Ukraine and Russia has since decreased somewhat as winter has limited the fighting and both countries face shortages.
